And your reply is a perfect example of people reading what the want to read and even reading what is not there. The post was about fly by night catholics, which are most of them, attending church when it is convenient for them, and dragging the family along when they feel obligated to attend. These are the people that use religion for their own convenient purposes.

Its not the point of using a religious holiday to get together, but that`s the way life is. People get together for special occasions, not typically every weekend because its not practical. People move away, or have other obligations from week to week. So all of us need reasons to get together, be it a birthday, an anniversary etc. My family also has a non-faith based reunion every year.

But usually for italian catholic families (which mine is) to get together in one home outside milestone celebrations usually involve some sort of religious holiday (christmas, and easter), which like I said I am all for because it brings everyone together. Just because i think the Catholic faith is ridiculous doesn`t mean I attend family functions just for a free meal, but then again, that`s your religious logic at its best I suppose. My family is still catholic and i respect that, however, if by personal satisfaction you mean I enjoy the company of my family and friends in spite of what may bring us together, well, then I am guilty as charged.

And there is no A-typical definition of 'the norm' you mention. Being a rationalist has nothing to do with fighting against the norm, I believe what I believe just as you do and that`s where we stand. We can`t help what we believe, and the only difference is that I know why I believe what I do, whereas Catholics generally are told what to believe and why they should believe it without question, along with all other religions.

That is the essence of faith; belief and conviction without any presence of fact, reason, or logic. It works for some people, and not for others.

Glad to see that you're being honest..

For you, it's not an "Easter Sunday" or "Easter holiday" it's simply a family meal. If you're an unbeliever or sceptic of anything to do with the Catholic faith, I guess to be honest Mike, you're going for a free meal...e basta!

Your entry is a perfect example of people using 'religion' to achieve individual satisfaction. Why use a religious holiday as a "reason to get together"? I suppose the more one fights against being part of the norm, one finds himself smack in the middle of it all..

Bon appetito!
